Kat Tan Sun is a Confucian Buddhist and a Chinese restaurant owner who has been ill for a long time. He is conscious of religious sensitivities and makes sure that the halal food is not mixed. Soleh, a pious Muslim, is upset that his wife, Menuk, works at Kat Tan Sun’s restaurant. Rika, a widow with one son, runs a bookstore, chooses to become a Catholic while encouraging her son to study Islam at the local mosque. She is also friends with Surya, a poor actor who stays in the mosque. Each character portrait brings out the ethnic-religious divisions in society, as represented by the stabbing of a pastor and church bombing, as well as attacks to the restaurant.
