It is a story about the musings of the first Indonesian native bishop, Monsignor A Soegijapranata SJ , since ordained until the end of the war against the Netherlands (1940-1949). This turbulent decade is marked by the end of Dutch colonialism, the Japanese penetration and occupation, the proclamation of Indonesia’s independence and the return of the Dutch to control Indonesia. These events not only make Soegija write his reflections in a diary fraught with meanings, he must also act to address the chaos resulting in the suffering of the people. He tries to play a role in the local, national and even internasional politics. It’s not surprising that President Sukarno rewards him with the title of National Hero. To be able to depict the role earlier, this film displays many real but fictionalized figures from Indonesia, Japan, Netherlands, whether civilian or military, in everyday events reconstructed with sufficient details. All of them emphasizes humanity’s primacy.
